Obesity is a life-threatening disease that affects millions of Americans. About 31.4% of adults in the United States are obese. It has been associated with about 112,000 deaths each year in the United States relative to healthy-weight individuals and is a major risk factor for other serious medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease.
The Healthy Living Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, GA specializes in bariatrics and the laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding system. The gastric banding system is a tool used to help you achieve sustained weight loss by limiting how much you can eat, reducing your appetite, and slowing digestion. The gastric band is recommended for bariatrics patients who are at least 100lbs over weight, body mass index of 35 with co-morbidities or 40 or greater. This procedure can help to reduce co-morbidities such as hypertension and diabetes.
