Doctors Hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission. Accreditation from this organization is a nationwide seal of approval that indicates the hospital complies with the highest national standards for safety and quality of care and is committed to continually improving patient care.

Disease Specific Certification from the Joint Commission

In addition to the accreditation listed above, the Joint Commission has also developed criteria for organizations to become certified in specific diseases or conditions. Doctors Hospital has earned the gold seal of approval in three disease specific areas:

  • Primary Stroke Center
  • Total Hip Replacement and Total Knee Replacement
  • Spinal Fusions

This additional distinction means that our medical professionals and our facility provide an advanced level of care by meeting requirements in three key areas: compliance with national standards, use of evidenced-based clinical practice guidelines, and having an organized approach to performance improvement.

Doctors Hospital is one of 405 hospitals in the U.S. and critical access hospitals to earn this distinction.  Doctors Hospital was recognized by The Joint Commission based on their on data reported about evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to improve care for certain conditions, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care and children’s asthma.

United HealthCare

UnitedHealth Premium Specialty Center designation for Surgical Spine

The UnitedHealth Premium surgical spine specialty centers are selected using evidenced-based criteria from current literature or standards developed by national organizations such as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and The Leapfrog Group. Some criteria include:

  • A full range of surgical spine care must be delivered including: orthopedic surgeons and/or neurosurgeons that specialize in spine, and availability of intraoperative monitoring of spinal cord function. Physical therapy and occupational therapy services must be available seven days per week.
  • At least one surgeon who has completed a spine fellowship is required. Dedicated operating rooms and staff, and a consistent patient care unit for provision of postoperative care are required.
  • Full emergency services must be available including: emergency room, intensive care unit, and rapid response team.

Doctors Hospital is recognized as a UnitedHealth Premium Joint and Surgical Specialty Center.  Doctors Hospital was selected using evidence-based criteria from current literature or standards developed by national organizations such as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Leapfrog Group.

Blue Cross Blue Shield Hip, Knee and Spine

Blue Cross/Blue Shield Center of Distinction for Hip and Knee Replacement and Spine Surgery

The designation is based on rigorous, clinically meaningful measures (or “selection criteria”) established with expert physicians’ and medical organizations’ recommendations. The goal is to help consumers find healthcare facilities that have demonstrated better overall outcomes (e.g., fewer medical complications, fewer readmissions and higher survival rates) in the delivery of specialty care. For each specialty area, BCBS does a thorough review of nationally established measures and includes input from expert physicians and medical organizations. Doctors Hospital has met the criteria to be designated as a Center of Distinction in the following:

Blue Distinction Centers for Spine Surgery: provide comprehensive inpatient spine surgery services, including discectomy, fusion and decompression procedures

Blue Distinction Centers for Knee and Hip Replacement: provide comprehensive inpatient knee and hip replacement services, including total knee replacement and total hip replacement surgeries.

The Joint and Spine Center at Doctors Hospital is designated by Aetna as an Institute of Quality for Total Joint Replacement and Spine Surgery.  This designation is based on measures of clinical performance, access and efficiency for orthopedic care.

Georgia Hospital Association

Georgia Hospital Association

Doctors Hospital is one of 17 hospitals named to the Georgia Hospital Association’s (GHA) Partnership for Health and Accountability (PHA) Core Measures Chairman’s Honor Roll, the highest on the list.  The honor roll is based on clinical data provided by the federal Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services (CMS), which administers the nation’s Medicare and Medicaid programs.  The data was collected from January 2011 to December 2011.

Commission on Cancer

ACoS accreditation Cancer Care Center

The Cancer Care Center at Doctors Hospital is accredited by the Commission on Cancer by the American College of Surgeons. The cancer program performance report issued an approval award with six commendations. The Commission on Cancer is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive quality care.

Chest Pain Center

Chest Pain Center

Doctors Hospital has received Chest Pain Center Accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers. As an accredited chest pain center, Doctors Hospital ensures that patients who come to the hospital complaining of chest pain or discomfort are given the immediate treatment necessary to avoid as much heart damage as possible. Protocol-based procedures developed by leading experts in cardiac care to reduce time to treatment in the critical early stages of a heart attack are part of Doctors Hospital’s overall cardiac care services.

American Burn Association

American Burn Association Verification

The Joseph M. Still Burn Center is verified by the American Burn Association. Burn Center Verification is a joint program of the American Burn Association (ABA) and the American College of Surgeons (ACS). To achieve verification, a burn center must meet the rigorous standards for organizational structure, personnel qualifications, facilities resources and medical care services set out in the in the ABA chapter on Guidelines for the Operation of Burn Centers in the ACS publication on Resources For Optimal Care Of The Injured Patient 2006. Elements of this voluntary program include completion of a pre-review questionnaire and an in-depth on-site review by members of the ABA Verification Committee. A written report by the site visit team is reviewed by the ABA Verification Committee and by the Committee on Trauma of the ACS.

Burn Center verification provides a true mark of distinction for a burn center and is an indicator to government, third-party payers, patients and their families, and accreditation organizations that the center provides high quality patient care to burn patients from time of injury through rehabilitation.

Best Fed Beginnings

Only Hospital In The Area Chosen To Participate In Best Fed Beginnings

Doctors Hospital is one of 89 hospitals selected nationally to participate in Best Fed Beginnings, a first-of-its-kind national effort to significantly improve breastfeeding rates in states where rates are currently the lowest.  The groups will work together in a 22 month learning collaborative, using proven quality improvement methods to transform their maternity care services in pursuit of “Baby-Friendly” designation. This designation verifies that a hospital has comprehensively implemented the American Academy of Pediatrics-endorsed Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, as established in the WHO/UNICEF Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative. 

AIMIS Award

Center of Excellence in Women’s Health Surgery

The American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery (AIMIS) has awarded Doctors Hospital as a Center of Excellence in Women’s Health Surgery, making the hospital the first in the area to receive such designation.

A hospital can be recognized as a Center for Excellence once it meets minimally-invasive surgery standards and outcomes as defined by AIMIS. Doctors Hospital has made minimally invasive surgery a priority, which helps minimize recovery times and provide better patient outcomes.

Certified Acute Rehab Facility

Only Accredited Inpatient Rehab In The Area

Recognized for its outstanding care, Doctors Hospital Inpatient Rehab Facility has been awarded a three-year Certified Acute Rehab Facility (CARF) accreditation for its adult physical rehabilitation program and a two-year accreditation for the specialty stroke rehabilitation by The Joint Commission.  This makes the Inpatient Rehab Facility the only CARF accredited facility in the area.

American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists

Only Accredited EEG Lab In The Area

The Laboratory of Accreditation Board of ABRET (American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists) has granted the EEG Laboratory at Doctors Hospital a 5 year accreditation. The award is based on evaluation of the technical quality of the EEGs performed in the lab as well as a review of policies. The EEG Lab at Doctors is the only lab in the CSRA with this accreditation.

Other Accreditations

The laboratory is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP). A CAP accredited laboratory undergoes a high level of quality review and management for every test. Over 2000 elements must be maintained through the CAP process.

The MRI and CT scanners are accredited by the American College of Radiology. By achieving this accreditation, Doctors Hospital has made a commitment to ensuring that the highest standard of quality and safety is maintained in these specific modalities.

Our Breast Imaging Center’s mammography services are accredited by the American College of Radiology and certified by the FDA.
