Burn Center Receives Designation
July 12, 2011
Augusta, GA - Doctors Hospital is pleased to announce that the Joseph M. Still Burn Center is formally recognized as a participant in the Georgia Trauma Network as a designated Burn Center.
This designation makes the burn center part of the Georgia Trauma Care Network, a group of hospitals and medical centers statewide with the resources to care for the most traumatically injured patients. Created in 2007, the Network was developed to provide Georgia patients with the best trauma care and to ensure that physicians and healthcare professionals could rely on an organized trauma system. “This is an incredible accomplishment for our facility and we are proud to be a part of the Georgia Trauma Network. We see the most critical burn patients in the state of Georgia and this designation highlights that,” says Terence van Arkel, Interim CEO for Doctors Hospital.
The designation process for the Doctors Hospital Burn Center began with an amendment to House Bill 307, recognizing burn trauma centers as integral participants in the Trauma network. For the past 18 months, Doctors Hospital and JMS Burn Centers, Inc. administrative teams have been working with the state of Georgia to rewrite legislation and eventually amend the bill. The amendment was officially signed into law in May 2011 by Georgia Governor, Nathan Deal. “Our burn center plays a very important role in trauma care for our state and we are very happy that we are being acknowledged for the care we provide,” says Tanya Simpson, Assistant Vice President of Burn Services at Doctors Hospital.
“We have always known that the care we give to our burn patients is the best in the country and to have our state recognize us for the burn trauma center is a great accomplishment,” says Dr. Fred Mullins, President of JMS Burn Centers, Inc. and the Medical Director of the Burn Center. “We plan on being active partners and participants within the network and look forward to doing so.” Dr. Mullins was recently appointed by Governor Nathan Deal to sit on the board of the Georgia Trauma Commission.
In 2010, the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital was verified by the American Burn Association and the American College of Surgeons, and remains the only “verified” Burn Center in Georgia as well as the only Trauma program in state verified by the American College of Surgeons.
