AUGUSTA, GA – Two medical teams from Linkoping University in Sweden will be visiting the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital throughout the month of May. The teams consist of physicians, nurses, a physiotherapist, an occupational therapist and medical technicians. Dr. Folke Sjoberg, the director and lead researcher at Linkoping University and the President of the European Burn Association, spent time at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in 1997 and wanted to share this experience with his colleagues at the university. One medical team will visit May 2-16 while the other team visits May 16-29.
“Dr. Sjoberg was most impressed with the volume of work we do, how the standard of care differs from the European approach, how the daily tasks on the unit are performed, and how the clinical teams are structured,” said Joan Wilson, MSN, MHA, RN, Director, Clinical Research, Joseph M. Still Research Foundation, Inc., and coordinator of the Swedish medical team’s visit.
The Swedes will observe burn treatments and burn surgeries being performed. The application of topical medications, dressings, devices, artificial skins, temporary coverings and various drugs that are used as standard of care at the Burn Center will be demonstrated in this clinical experience.
“Dr. Sjoberg expressed that it is his hope the clinicians taking part will return to Sweden with innovative
ideas that may improve burn care in Linkoping,” said Ms. Wilson.
