Local Hotels Lend Helping Hand To Out Of Town Patients
July 07, 2011
Augusta, GA - The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 1,590,000 Americans will be diagnosed this year, and now some local hotels want to help make their fight a little easier.
Doctors Hospital and four area hotels have teamed up to help patients and their families when they need to travel to Augusta for treatment. Each hotel is offering a special discounted rate for any patient receiving treatment at Doctors Hospital as well as for their caregivers who are traveling with them. “This is a program that we started because we know firsthand the hardships that traveling long distances can create and we wanted to make it easier on our patients,” says Lance Danko, Director of Oncology Services for Doctors Hospital.
Of the nearly 750 cancer patients Doctors Hospital treats each year, about one-fourth of those have to travel from outside the Augusta area. Treatment can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks if the patient is undergoing radiation therapy. “It really makes you feel good when you can turn to the patient and their caregiver and let them know that it’s not just our doctors trying to help them, but that they have the support of our community. This is truly a community effort and it really makes you feel good to know you are surrounded by businesses that care,” says Danko.
Patients can access the discounted hotel rate by calling the participating hotel and asking for the “Doctors Hospital” discounted rate. Participating hotels include:
