TRIAL BY FIRE: Lives Re-Forged Documentary

Every burn survivor has a story to share, whether big or small. In a new film, TRIAL BY FIRE: Lives Re-Forged, patients share their story of triumph and survival. One burn survivor featured in the documentary is Connor McKemey, a former patient of the Joseph M. Still Burn at Doctors Hospital.

In 2008, 13 year-old Connor was burned on over 87 percent of his body and placed in a medically induced coma after an explosion in his family’s backyard fireplace. His mother, Karin, also received burns to her face and hands trying to save Connor. After spending more than four months in the hospital enduring more than 50 skin graft procedures and another mother month in a rehabilitation center, Connor went home to Tega Cay, South Carolina, to continue his journey to recovery.

Just two and a half years after his accident, Connor helped lead his team to a state championship in lacrosse. The McKemey’s were originally told that Connor would not be able to play contact sports again. Doctors reassessed the situation once they saw how well Connor was doing.

In addition to Connor McKemey, TRIAL BY FIRE: Lives Re-Forged, features J.R. Martinez who was serving as a U.S. soldier in Iraq who suffered burns to more than 40 percent of his body when his Humvee hit a landmine. Martinez was a contestant on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” and is now a motivational speaker.
