Thanksgiving Prevention Tips
The Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital admits 5 to 8 patients a day, and unfortunately, some of the admissions are the result of injuries caused while preparing the yearly Thanksgiving turkey in November.
“Every year we typically treat three or four patients burned by grease while preparing their turkeys in turkey-fryers,” said Dr. Fred Mullins, medical director of the Joseph M. Still Burn Center.
One good rule of thumb, suggested Burn Services Director Tanya Simpson, is pre-determine how much oil will be needed before you actually put the turkey in the fryer. “Begin by filling the fryer with water and then put your turkey in it to determine how much oil is needed, that way you won’t risk the chance of overflowing the container with oil and getting burned,” warned Mrs. Simpson. “Be sure to keep children and pets away from the fryer as well.”
