Advanced Radiation Therapy

The Cancer Care Center provides leading edge radiation therapy through the Radiation Oncology Center at Doctors Hospital. Our center is accredited in Radiation Oncology by the America College of Radiology (ACR). Featuring highly trained dosimetrists, physicists, radiation therapists and board certified radiation oncologists, we offer the latest technology to treat a variety of cancers. You don’t have to drive hours to receive leading-edge radiation therapy- we’re right here close to home. Our center is easily accessible on the Doctors Hospital campus at the intersection of Bobby Jones Expressway and I-20, and convenient parking allows you to park right out front.

Radiation therapy destroys cancer cells by delivering high doses of radiation to the affected area. It is a highly targeted, accurate treatment designed to kill cancer cells while sparing normal tissue and organs nearby. Used alone, or in combination with other treatments, radiation therapy is an important weapon in our fight against cancer.

Depending on the type of cancer, we offer both External Beam and Brachytherapy radiation delivery:

External Beam Radiation - High energy radiation beams delivered by a linear accelerator to penetrate tissues and destroy cancer cells.

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) - A computer controlled, high precision radiotherapy that conforms to the shape of a tumor. The intensity of the radiation dose is modulated- or varied- to focus a higher dose to the tumor while minimizing radiation exposure to surrounding normal tissues. We offer the latest imaging technology to enhance IMRT –called IGRT- a computer guidance system that continuously monitors the patient’s position and gives feedback to the therapist when changes occur-allowing treatment to remain precisely and accurately targeted on the tumor. This technology can be coordinated with the patient’s normal breathing pattern to account for movement of the tumor. This enables the patient to remain relaxed and less stressed while receiving treatment- particularly when being treated for lung cancer.

Trilogy ™ Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and Radiotherapy (SRT) - The most advanced, sophisticated machine for destroying cancerous tumors throughout the body, Trilogy delivers the single, most powerful dose of radiation in one session. So precise and accurate, the treatment is referred to as radio-surgery- although no incision is involved and it is painless. SRS provides a noninvasive alternative to surgery, allowing treatment of some otherwise inoperable tumors. Recovery and healing are fast, enabling the patient to return to normal activity more quickly.

SRT is very similar to SRS, but instead of being completed in a single session, the dose of radiation dose is delivered over a course of several treatment sessions, instead of all at once. Whether to use SRS, SRT, or some other form of treatment is a decision your doctor will make based on many factors, such as the size, location, and type of tumor, as well as your overall state of health.

Brachytherapy - Also known as high dose radiation (HDR) treatment, or internal radiotherapy, this is a method in which the radioactive source is placed directly into, or nearby the cancerous tissue.

MammoSite - A revolutionary brachytherapy used to target breast cancer after a lumpectomy, it enables certain women to receive site-specific radiation over a period of only five days compared to traditional treatment delivered five days per week over a period of six weeks.
