What are Female Pelvic Floor Disorders?
The pelvic floor is a set of ligaments, muscles, and connective tissue in the lowest part of the pelvis that provides support for a woman’s internal organs. This includes bladder, bowel, rectum, uterus, and vagina. Pelvic floor disorders can occur when women have tears in the connective tissue or when women have weakened pelvic muscles. When this occurs women may begin to have problems controlling their bladder and bowels. They often describe symptoms such as urine leakage, bowel, gas or stool leakage, difficulty emptying their bladder or having a bowel movement, or an overactive bladder. Some women also feel or see tissue coming out of the opening of their vagina. This could be a condition called bladder or vaginal prolapse.
Risk factors can include: age, race, diet, heavy lifting, obesity, pregnancy/childbirth, smoking, chronic constipation, menopause, and sexual dysfunction.
Few women seek help for pelvic floor problems due to embarrassment or the feeling that “it’s just a part of life that I have to accept.” There are minimally invasive or non-invasive options that can cure these problems.
