Expert care for pelvic floor disorders

Pelvic floor disorders are some of the main gynecologic and urogynecologic conditions we treat. The pelvic floor is the set of ligaments, muscles and connective tissue in the lower pelvis that supports the pelvic organs. These organs include:

  • Bladder
  • Bowel
  • Rectum
  • Uterus
  • Vagina

Pelvic floor disorders may result from tears in the connective tissue or weakened pelvic muscles. When this occurs, women may begin to have problems controlling certain bodily functions, resulting in conditions such as urinary incontinence. Common symptoms of pelvic floor disorders include:

  • Bowel, gas or stool leakage
  • Difficulty emptying the bladder or having a bowel movement
  • Overactive bladder
  • Urine leakage

Pelvic floor disorder treatment options

Our specialists provide a variety of non-invasive treatments options and minimally invasive procedures to correct pelvic floor disorders. Treatment options may include:

  • Dietary changes
  • Electrical stimulation
  • Lifestyle changes, such as managing weight or quitting smoking
  • Medications
  • Minimally invasive surgery
  • Pelvic floor exercises (Kegels)
  • Physical therapy
  • Prosthetic support device (pessary)

Risk factors for pelvic floor disorders

Several factors can contribute to pelvic floor disorders, including:

  • Age
  • Diet
  • Chronic constipation
  • Heavy lifting
  • Menopause
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Race
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Smoking

Robotic gynecologic and urogynecologic surgery

We are committed to remaining on the forefront of innovative techniques and technological advancements in gynecologic surgery. We were the first hospital in the area to use robot-assisted surgical technology in performing gynecologic and urogynecologic procedures. With more robotic surgical options available than ever before, we help women get back to their lives with surgeries that use smaller incisions and offer shorter recovery periods.

Our robotic surgical options in gynecology include:

  • Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus)
  • Myomectomy (removal of uterine fibroids)
  • Sacrocolpopexy (repair of pelvic organ prolapse)

Diagnostic breast and bone imaging for women

We are proud to have a designated place for women to go for all their imaging needs. At the Women's Diagnostic Center, we not only offer screening mammograms but also bone density testing to identify bone mineral loss and the presence of osteoporosis.

Services at the Women's Diagnostic Center include:

  • Breast magnetic resonance imaging
  • Breast ultrasound
  • Digital mammography
  • Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scans (bone density)

Compassionate maternity services

We are here throughout your pregnancy to help you prepare for the big day. Our Cradle Club classes are available to help expectant parents and family members prepare for labor and delivery and life with a newborn.

Following childbirth, we practice couplet care and daily quiet times to help you and your baby bond. Our staff includes board-certified lactation consultants who are available to facilitate the breastfeeding process, so you can feel confident in feeding your baby before leaving the hospital.

Maternal fetal medicine

At our hospital, we provide specialized care for women with high-risk pregnancies. This means that a mother and/or her baby may be at risk for complications during pregnancy due to a variety of factors, such as age or a pre-existing medical condition. Our staff includes perinatologists (experts in maternal fetal medicine), and we have a neonatal intensive care unit on-site to meet your baby's medical needs following birth.
